How to choose an immigration lawyer in Barcelona

Choosing an immigration lawyer in Spain isn't like hiring any other civil attorney: immigration deadlines, the criteria used by each Oficina de Extranjería, and documentary requirements change every year and differ by provincial delegation. A good lawyer knows when in the year filing an arraigo social is most likely to land on a favourable instructor's desk, and when the non-contentious route to citizenship beats the contentious one.

Three things to check before hiring: first, confirm active bar registration — without it, they cannot represent you before the Ministry. Second, ask for a written fixed-fee estimate covering Ministry fees, translation, and likely appeals. Third, ask how many cases exactly like yours they have handled in the last 12 months — "immigration" is a wide field, and social rooting with criminal records is a very different practice from Golden Visa renewals.

Prolio only lists lawyers whose bar registration has been verified against the official bar association registry. Filter by specialty, languages, and fee band to narrow the list to lawyers who fit your case. First consultations typically cost €0–€80, and most firms credit it against your first invoice if you retain them.

Frequently asked questions

How long does an arraigo social case take in Barcelona?
Typically 4 to 10 months after filing. The Barcelona Oficina de Extranjería is usually more loaded than Madrid's, especially for social rooting cases after the 2022 reform. The Generalitat's arraigo report is the critical path and can take 2–3 months on its own.
Can I apply if I don't speak Spanish or Catalan?
You can start the procedure, but in Catalonia the integration report credits Catalan knowledge in addition to Spanish. A Parla.cat certificate or an active course at a language consortium helps. Many Barcelona firms handle cases in Arabic, Urdu, English, French and Chinese while the client is still learning.
What do immigration lawyers cost in Barcelona?
Fees usually run €500–€1,600. A NIE or card renewal is at the low end; a full arraigo with an appeal, or a previously-denied citizenship case, is near the top. Always request a written fixed-fee quote with fees and translation costs itemised before signing.
Does my lawyer have to speak Catalan?
No — immigration procedures are a central-government matter and are processed in Spanish. But some regional reports (like the Generalitat's arraigo report) can be in Catalan, and a Catalan-speaking lawyer speeds up coordination with council social services in the province.
Can a Barcelona lawyer handle my case if I live elsewhere in Catalonia?
Yes. Territorial jurisdiction follows your empadronamiento, not the lawyer's office. Many Barcelona firms run cases from L'Hospitalet, Badalona, Sabadell, Girona or Tarragona with hybrid meetings. The in-person interview at the Oficina de Extranjería happens in the province where you're registered.
What do I bring to the first consultation?
Full passport, historical empadronamiento certificate, apostilled criminal record from your country of origin, Spanish criminal record certificate, work contract or written offer if applicable, and any prior decision. With this, a competent lawyer can give you a plan and a fixed-fee quote at the first meeting.
